This course is designed to build the groundwork for future scent work, nosework, detection, and real-world search skills by developing clear communication between dog and handler around target odor recognition and indication behaviors. Teams will focus on building value for odor, engagement in the hunt, confidence in searching, and developing a clear indication at source. Dogs and handlers will begin learning foundational scent theory, reward placement, search mechanics, handling skills, and reading canine body language throughout the search process. This class emphasizes creating strong odor association, problem-solving, focus under distraction, and building drive through fun, structured search games. Whether your goals are sport scent work, detection foundations, mental enrichment, or simply strengthening your dog’s natural abilities, this course creates the framework for future success. Topics may include: • Building value for target odor • Introduction to passive and active indications • Search engagement & hunt drive • Reading canine body language during search • Container and environmental searches • Reward timing & placement • Handler mechanics and leash handling • Confidence building through problem solving • Introduction to scent theory and airflow awareness Open to dogs of all breeds and experience levels.
