Service Description

The hunt is getting bigger! Beyond the Source is the next progression in LMK K9’s scent work program, moving teams from controlled search environments into more complex odor problems and, ultimately, outside tracking. This class will be divided between **indoor and outdoor work**, allowing us to introduce new concepts in a more controlled environment before asking dogs and handlers to apply those skills outside. One of the biggest advancements in this course will be the introduction of additional odors.Until now, our dogs have built confidence, commitment, search patterns, final responses, handler communication, and an understanding of their established source odor. Now we begin asking a more difficult question: **Can your dog identify the odor that matters when other odors are present?** Through odor discrimination, dogs will learn that finding odor alone is no longer enough. They must learn to differentiate between odors, remain committed to the task, and clearly communicate when they have located the correct source. Then we take the hunt outside. Teams will begin transferring their acquired scent-work skills into **exterior environments**, where wind, terrain, vegetation, environmental contamination, changing scent movement, distractions, and significantly larger working areas begin influencing the search. From there, we introduce the foundations of **outside tracking**—teaching dogs to follow odor through an environment rather than simply searching an area for a stationary source. Teams will work on: - Introducing and conditioning additional odors - Odor discrimination - Identifying and committing to the correct source odor - Maintaining a clear final response - Reading changes in behavior around odor - Expanding search patterns and working areas - Transitioning from interior to exterior searches - Understanding how environmental conditions affect odor - Handler leash skills and movement outdoors - Beginning exterior tracking - Building independence, persistence, and commitment to the hunt This course isn't about simply making the search harder. It's about asking the dog to think more critically about odor while teaching the handler to recognize what the dog is communicating. The skills we've built inside now have somewhere new to go. Outside. Forward. And beyond the source.
