Odor Foundations 4: The Working Hunt

The foundation is built. The hunt is understood. Now it's time to put it to work. The Working Hunt takes established scent teams into larger, more challenging real-world searches where the focus shifts from learning how to hunt to maintaining that hunt as difficulty increases. Working in hybrid indoor and outdoor environments such as Tractor Supply, Lowe's, and Home Depot, teams will tackle larger search areas while we intentionally increase the 3 D's — Distance, Duration, and Distraction. More dogs, people, movement, environmental odor, changing surfaces, airflow, merchandise, and everyday activity will challenge dogs to remain focused and committed to the task. Because these teams have progressed through the Scent Work Series together, everyone enters this section with the same established theory and foundation. This allows us to begin adding more advanced problems, including new target odors and odor discrimination, requiring dogs to determine which odor they are being asked to locate rather than simply finding a familiar source. Handlers will continue developing their ability to read their dogs while giving them the independence needed to solve increasingly complex scent problems. As the course progresses, teams will begin working toward the next evolution of the hunt: moving beyond simply locating and indicating source and beginning the foundation for retrieving the odor source. The Working Hunt is where foundation meets pressure — bigger searches, harder problems, stronger dogs, and more capable teams.
